During this tumultuous time of history, some might say that we live in a terrible, oppressive country.
We say that we live in the freest country in the world; it’s a land of opportunity, purchased with the blood, sweat, tears, and prayers of people who love this country and the principles it stands for.
The Founding Fathers laid the foundation of this country in these words from the Declaration of Independence:
The unanimous Declaration of the thirteen united States of America…We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights, that among these are Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness.–That to secure these rights, Governments are instituted among Men, deriving their just powers from the consent of the governed, –That whenever any Form of Government becomes destructive of these ends, it is the Right of the People to alter or to abolish it, and to institute new Government, laying its foundation on such principles and organizing its powers in such form, as to them shall seem most likely to effect their Safety and Happiness.In Congress, July 4, 1776 (Declaration of Independence: A Transcription | National Archives)
Revolutionary men and their families sacrificed their homes, fortunes, and often their lives to secure their liberty and their posterity’s future from a tyrannous king.
The sacrifice for freedom continues with patriots that lay down their lives for this country and their families. It’s a choice that many of them make because they know that freedom isn’t free.
This is why we celebrate the 4th of July in our constitutional republic. The courage of our Constitutional framers and the generations that followed them should instill a sense of pride and honor to be American.
